Donald Trump on defensive over new Russia claims

The US president defended his ties to Moscow following new accusations about a cosy relationship with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

The Washington Post on Saturday said that Mr Trump had gone to “extraordinary lengths to conceal details of his conversations” with the Russian president, particularly after a meeting at the 2017 G20 summit in Hamburg, in which he reportedly took possession of his interpreter’s notes.

Earlier, the New York Times reported that US law enforcement officials had opened an inquiry into whether Mr Trump was covertly working for Russia following his 2017 firing of James Comey, the former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The twin revelations have deepened Mr Trump’s political woes over his connections to Russia just as Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor charged with investigating his campaign’s alleged “collusion” with Moscow, is nearing the end of his investigation. Concerns about Mr Trump’s Russia ties — which he has described as a “witch hunt” and a “hoax” — have dogged the US president since he arrived at the White House two years ago.

Mr Trump responded to the allegations with a flurry of angry tweets over the weekend lashing out at Mr Comey, the New York Times and Hillary Clinton, his Democratic opponent in 2016.

In an interview with Fox News late on Saturday, Mr Trump added that it was “insulting” to allege that he had ever worked for Russia and he was “not keeping anything under wraps”. Mike Pompeo, the secretary of state, meanwhile, told CBS News that the notion of Mr Trump being a threat to US national security was “ludicrous” and “silly on its face”.

The allegations have raised the stakes ahead of confirmation hearings due to begin in the US Senate this week for William Barr, Mr Trump’s pick for attorney-general, who was tapped following last year’s resignation of Jeff Sessions. Democrats are likely to grill Mr Barr on whether he would guarantee the integrity of Mr Mueller’s probe.

“The number one question on everyone’s mind: will Bob Mueller be allowed to complete this investigation without political interference from the attorney-general or president and will the results of it be made public so America can see for itself exactly what happened?,” Democratic senator Dick Durbin told NBC News.
